Wide Open Ditson was a legendary American saloon that was located in the heart of New York City's Tenderloin district. It was founded in 1882 by John Ditson, a former bartender at the nearby Hoffman House. Ditson's saloon quickly became a popular watering hole for some of the most famous and infamous people in American history.
Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Buffalo Bill Cody were all regulars at Wide Open Ditson. Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, and O. Henry were also known to frequent the saloon. Wide Open Ditson was a place where everyone was welcome, and anything could happen.
The saloon was known for its lively atmosphere and its free-flowing booze. Ditson was a generous host, and he always made sure that his customers had a good time. Wide Open Ditson was also a place where people could gamble, dance, and sing. It was a true melting pot of American society.
In 1898, Ditson sold the saloon to a group of investors. The new owners renamed the saloon the Hoffman House Cafe, but it never regained its former glory. Wide Open Ditson closed its doors for good in 1919, but its legend lives on.

In 2018, historian Peter A. Levy published a book about the Wide Open Ditson saloon. The book, also titled Wide Open Ditson, tells the story of the saloon and its colorful cast of characters.
