Hartshorne begins by examining the nature of philosophy. He argues that philosophy is not simply a matter of abstract logic and argumentation, but also a matter of imagination and creativity. Philosophy, he says, is "the art of seeing things together." It is the ability to see the world in a new way, to make connections that others have not seen before.
Poetry, too, is a matter of seeing things together. Poetry is the art of using language to create a new reality. It is the ability to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary, to show us the world in a new light.
Hartshorne argues that philosophy and poetry are complementary disciplines. Philosophy provides us with the tools to understand the world, while poetry provides us with the means to experience the world. Together, philosophy and poetry can help us to achieve a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe.
Philosophy as Poetry is a challenging and rewarding book that will appeal to anyone interested in the nature of philosophy, poetry, or the human experience.
