Chol Hwan Kang's Ordeal

Chol Hwan's nightmare began in 1990, when his family was wrongly accused of spying for South Korea. He and his mother were mercilessly thrown into Camp 22, a desolate concentration camp deep within the barren mountains of North Korea.

Inside the camp, Chol Hwan faced unimaginable suffering. He was subjected to daily torture, starvation, and forced labor. The guards were merciless, and the inmates were treated like animals. Yet, despite the unimaginable horrors he endured, Chol Hwan's spirit never wavered.

The Aquariums

The title of the book, "The Aquariums of Pyongyang," refers to the glass-walled cells in which the inmates were forced to live. These cells were so small that the prisoners could barely move, and they were constantly exposed to the harsh glare of the sun.

The aquariums became a symbol of both the physical and psychological torment that Chol Hwan and his fellow inmates endured. They were a constant reminder of their isolation, their vulnerability, and their total lack of freedom.

Finding Hope

Amidst the darkness and despair, Chol Hwan found solace in the unlikeliest of places. He befriended a Christian inmate named Kim Young-sun, who taught him about the teachings of Jesus Christ. Through faith, Chol Hwan found a glimmer of hope and a way to cope with his unimaginable suffering.

Escape and Redemption

In 2002, after 10 years of horrific imprisonment, Chol Hwan miraculously escaped from Camp 22. He made his way to South Korea, where he was met with both disbelief and compassion.

Once safe in South Korea, Chol Hwan vowed to share his story with the world. He became a tireless advocate for human rights and a voice for the voiceless victims of North Korea's brutal regime.

Pierre Rigoulot's Role

"The Aquariums of Pyongyang" was co-authored by Pierre Rigoulot, a French journalist who met Chol Hwan in South Korea. Rigoulot was deeply moved by Chol Hwan's story, and he collaborated with him to bring it to life in this powerful memoir.

Rigoulot's journalistic skills shine through in the book's vivid descriptions and meticulous research. He provides a comprehensive account of North Korea's prison system, as well as the political and social context that allowed such atrocities to occur.

Legacy and Impact

"The Aquariums of Pyongyang" has become an international bestseller and has been translated into over 20 languages. It has raised awareness about the human rights abuses in North Korea and has inspired countless people around the world.

The book has also played a significant role in Chol Hwan's life. It has allowed him to share his story with the world and to find healing and closure after the horrors he endured.

"The Aquariums of Pyongyang" is a powerful and moving testament to the human spirit's resilience and the indomitable power of hope. It is a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it, and it is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit can triumph over adversity.
