Operation Plunder was the culmination of months of meticulous planning by the Allied high command. The plan called for a massive assault across the Rhine River, with the main crossing points located at Rees, Wesel, and Xanten. The operation was divided into two phases: the initial assault and the subsequent breakout from the bridgeheads established on the far bank.

The first phase of the operation was scheduled to begin on March 23, 1945. The 21st Army Group, under the command of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, was responsible for the main assault. The 9th U.S. Army, under the command of General William Simpson, would provide support and assist with the breakout.

On the morning of March 23, the Allied artillery opened fire, pounding German positions on the east bank of the Rhine. At 10:30 AM, the first wave of Allied troops crossed the river in assault boats. The Germans were caught off guard by the suddenness and ferocity of the attack and were unable to mount an effective defense.

The Allied troops quickly established a foothold on the far bank and began to expand their bridgeheads. By the end of the day, the Allies had secured crossings at all three of their target locations. The first phase of Operation Plunder had been a resounding success.
